Selection Guide for Pipe Chain Conveyor and Belt Conveyor: Core Differences and Application Scenarios Based on Material Characteristics

In the field of industrial bulk material conveying, pipe chain conveyors and belt conveyors are two very common devices with different working principles and applicable scenarios. Choosing which device is not simply a matter of judging its quality, but rather a comprehensive decision-making process based on core requirements, especially material characteristics. Wrong choices can lead to low conveying efficiency, severe material loss, and even system paralysis. This article will delve into the differences in applicable scenarios between the two from the core dimension of material characteristics, providing clear guidance for your selection.

1、 Core working principle and structural differences

To understand its applicable scenarios, it is necessary to understand its fundamental differences.

Belt conveyor: using a circular belt as the traction and load-bearing component, the belt is wrapped around the head and tail rollers, and powered by the driving rollers. The material is directly supported on the belt and conveyed horizontally or obliquely through the continuous operation of the belt. Its structure is relatively open (although there is a cover plate, it is not sealed), and the conveying process can be seen.

Pipe chain conveyor: The chain is driven by a chain wheel to rotate, and discs or scrapers are installed on the chain at certain intervals. The entire chain is wrapped in a closed circular pipe, and the material is transported inside the pipe like a "piston" under the push of the disc. Its core feature is a fully enclosed pipeline structure.

It is this fundamental structural difference that determines the vastly different adaptability of the two to material properties.

2、 Selection decision matrix based on material characteristics

The material characteristics are the factors that determine the selection of conveying equipment, mainly reflected in the following aspects:

1. The physical state and fluidity of materials

Powdery and ultrafine powder materials (such as flour, cement, fly ash, graphite powder, calcium carbonate, etc.)

Belt conveyor: Extremely unsuitable. Open or semi open structures cannot effectively prevent dust, which can cause serious material loss and environmental pollution, posing great health hazards to workplaces and personnel.

Chain machine: solution. Its fully enclosed pipeline structure can prevent dust leakage, ensure material integrity, avoid waste and pollution, and is the main force for conveying powdered materials.

Granular and small block shaped materials (such as plastic pellets, grains, fertilizers, ore fragments, etc.)

Belt conveyor: very suitable. For dry, flowable, and non sticky granular materials, belt conveyors have high efficiency, low energy consumption, and large processing capacity.

Chain machine: applicable. However, when transporting such materials horizontally, their energy consumption and cost may be higher than those of belt conveyors. But its advantage lies in the ability to simultaneously complete horizontal, inclined, and vertical multi-directional combined transportation, and it is still a better choice in situations where dust or pollution prevention is needed.

2. Adhesion and humidity of materials

Highly viscous and easily adhesive materials (such as wet sludge, clay, materials with high sugar syrup content, etc.)

Belt conveyor: Not applicable. The material is prone to sticking to the belt, causing the belt to deviate, the cleaner to fail, and the material to return, ultimately leading to a sharp drop in conveying efficiency and a significant increase in maintenance costs.

Chain machine: applicable. The forced pushing of the disc inside the pipeline can effectively crush and transport materials with certain viscosity. However, materials with extremely high viscosity (such as paste like) may require specially designed discs and higher power drives.

Oil containing or high moisture materials

Belt conveyor: Not applicable. Oil or moisture can contaminate belts, corrode equipment, and also cause adhesion and maintenance issues.

Chain machine: applicable. A sealed structure can accommodate materials containing liquids (taking into account material corrosion resistance) without leaking or polluting the environment.

3. Grindability and hardness of materials

Highly abrasive materials (such as quartz sand, slag, sintered ore, etc.)

Belt conveyor: More suitable. This can be addressed by selecting wear-resistant belts (such as thickened rubber coverings) and wear-resistant lining plates. Wear mainly occurs at the dropping point and the roller, making maintenance relatively convenient.

Chain machine: Careful evaluation is required. The material causes severe wear on the inner wall of the pipeline and the chain/disc. Although wear-resistant steel or lining can be used, the wear of key moving parts (chains, discs) remains a challenge, and maintenance costs and replacement frequency may be high.

Low abrasive materials: Both are available, and can be selected based on other characteristics.

4. Temperature and specificity of materials

High temperature materials:

Belt conveyor: Ordinary rubber belts have limited temperature resistance (usually<120 ℃) and require the use of special heat-resistant belts, resulting in higher costs.

Pipe chain machine: It can be entirely made of metal structure and has stronger high-temperature resistance (usually up to 400-500 ℃ or above, depending on the material), making it the preferred choice for high-temperature material transportation.

Fragile materials (such as activated carbon, food puffing materials, etc.):

Belt conveyor: It is prone to damage at the feeding point and high drop.

Pipe chain machine: The low-speed and stable pushing method has extremely low material crushing rate, making it very suitable for conveying materials that require maintaining a complete crystal structure.

Toxic, harmful, odorous, or inert gas protected materials:

Chain machine: Select. Its airtightness can prevent toxic substances from leaking out, and it can also be filled with protective gases such as nitrogen to prevent oxidation or explosion. Its safety performance is irreplaceable.

3、 Other important selection considerations

In addition to material characteristics, it is also necessary to consider comprehensively:

Conveyor path: When complex three-dimensional turning (horizontal+vertical+inclined) is required, the integration of pipe chain machine is completed, which has great advantages. The implementation of complex paths by belt conveyors requires multiple devices to overlap, which occupies a large area and is costly.

Space limitation: The pipeline layout of the pipe chain machine is flexible, which can fully utilize space and even vertically climb to save land. Belt conveyors require a large installation space and passage.

Conveying capacity and distance: Belt conveyors have unparalleled cost and efficiency advantages in long-distance, high-capacity continuous conveying, reaching several kilometers in length. Chain conveyors are usually used for medium to short distances and small to medium conveying volumes.

Automation and cleaning requirements: The food and pharmaceutical industries have extremely high requirements for hygiene and cleanliness. The pipe chain machine can be designed as a fully stainless steel structure, with no dead corners, and supports CIP (on-site cleaning), which is the standard choice.

Summary and Decision Suggestions

|Characteristic dimension | Belt conveyor | Pipe chain conveyor|

| :--- | :--- | :--- |

|Core advantages | Long distance, large capacity, low cost, open and easy to maintain | Fully enclosed, dust-free, pollution proof, multi-directional transportation, space saving|

|Applicable materials | Dry, non sticky, dust-free requirements for granular/block materials | Powdery, ultrafine powder, fragile, toxic and harmful, high temperature, sticky materials|

|Not applicable for materials | Powdery, highly viscous, oil-water, dust prone, toxic materials | Extremely viscous (such as paste), highly abrasive materials (requiring special design)|

|Typical scenarios | Raw material transportation in mines, ports, power plants, and building materials factories | Powder transportation in industries such as chemical, plastic, food, pharmaceutical, lithium battery, and fine ceramics|

Final Decision Formula:

First, consider the materials: dusty, toxic, odorous, fragile, and powdery - prioritize the use of a chain conveyor.

Long distance, large capacity, coarse materials, dust-free requirements - prioritize belt conveyors.

Complex space: path complexity, need to turn, vertical lifting - prioritize pipe chain machine.

In summary, belt conveyors are the "highway" in the field of bulk material transportation, pursuing efficiency and scale; The pipe chain conveyor, on the other hand, is a "special closed pipeline" that specializes in solving difficult, precise, and high demand conveying tasks. By grasping the material characteristics as the core, you have achieved more than half of the success in your selection process.
